  Aims

The Burnley and District Historical Society was formed shortly after the Second World War to promote and facilitate interest in local history in its broadest sense. It currently has about 100 members.

Membership

Members meet at regular intervals between September and April for lectures on a variety of historical subjects, both national and local. See programme. The meetings are held at the New Church on Briercliffe Road, Burnley see map, a comfortable and well-equipped venue. Visitors are welcome at £2.00 a head and new members are welcome membership fees being a modest £10.00 per year (£5 for students) see Membership page. 

Publications

The other main work of the Society relates to the publication and sale of books and pamphlets, large and small on a wide variety of local history topics. Over the years many have been published and there is a strong ongoing publishing programme. Retrospect, the journal of the Society, which contains articles on local history, is published annually. The Society's Newsletter is published three times a year. Retrospect and the Newsletters are free to members.

Other activities

Twice a year, usually in the summer months, excursions are made to places of interest in the fairly immediate area. In recent years visits have been made to the Castle Cement Works Clitheroe, the John Rylands Library, Manchester, Stoneyhurst College, Hurst Green and Rochdale Town Hall.
